Bella Swan is used to the heat and sunshine of Phoenix, Arizona but she decides to trade that for the damp, gloomy town of Forks, Washington, to allow her mother and step-father to tour the country in pursuit of his baseball career. Bella goes to live with the father she barely knows, and tries to fit in to a community so different to what she is used to. She is the centre of attention, as the girls try to be her best friend, and the boys to be her boyfriend. All that is, except for the Cullens.
Edward Cullen - beautiful in every sense of the word, initially treats Bella with hate and fear, though Bella has no idea why. Then, after his disappearence for a few days, his behaviour shifts dramatically, and allows Bella close. Too close, at times, and Bella begins to realise that Edward is much more than she realised.
With the assistance of Jacob Black's native legends, Bella comes to realise that Edward, and indeed his entire family, are vampires. She knows she should be terrified by this, but it only seeks to draw her closer to Edward. Though at first reluctant to further their relationship, at Bella's persistence, Edward introduces Bella to his family. At first, the interactions are successful, albeit with some degree of frostiness between Bella and Rosalie. All this changes at an ill-fated baseball game amongst the Cullens and Bella.
Three other vampires stumble upon the game; ones more inclined to considering humans as food. One of the three, a 'tracker' dedicates his abilities to finding and killing Bella, no matter where she may be. In a desperate bid to keep her safe, Edward sends Bella back to Phoenix with Jasper and Alice, where he hopes she will be safe.
One thing he forgot to consider was that trouble and danger always finds Bella Swan.
