New Moon picks up where Twilight left off. Bella is back in Forks with Edward, about to celebrate her eighteenth Birthday. This is not an entirely happy day for Bella, however, as it serves as a reminder to her that she is growing older whilst Edward remains perpetually seventeen. Bella suffers a dream of herself aged and looking as she remembers her Grandmother, being visited by Edward. In spite of this she heads to the party Edward is throwing for her at his house. Whilst there, events take a dark turn when Bella cuts herself. The sight of blood sets Jasper (as the newest "vegetarian" vampire) off, and it requires both Emmett and Edward to restrain him. During the scuffle , Bella is thrown backwards over the table, cutting herself badly on broken glass in the process. The only Cullen who manages to remain unaffected is Carlisle. This incident leads Edward to believe being around him is too dangerous for Bella, and he persuades his family to leave Forks, persuading Bella on the way that he no longer loves her.
Bella proceeds into a downward spiral. She no longer seems to care for life, and she becomes in effect a walking zombie. She no longer hangs out with her friends (except when Charlie forces her to) and Charlie considers sending her back to Jacksonville to live with her mother. However whilst out on one of her rare nights out, she hers Edward's voice in her head whilst acting recklessly. In a bid to hear it again, she decides to be more reckless. She buys two old motorbikes to ride. Unfortunately, they are not running, so she takes them to the only mechanic she knows who she can trust to keep a secret from Charlie - Jacob Black. As she watches him work they grow closer. Bella nightmares about Edward leaving decrease, and starts to regain a measure of happiness.
This soon falls apart, however. Jacob gets sick for a month, and afterwards refuses to see Bella. Whilst out searching for her and Edward's meadow however, she stumbles across Laurent, one of James' coven in Twilight. He is about to kill her when five large wolves appear and chase him off. She then seeks out Jacob, but he sends her away. That night however, he turns up outside her window, during their conversation he gives her enough hints to work out that he is now a werewolf. Meanwhile, hikers have been going missing in the forests around forks amid reports of giant bears. It transpires that Victoria and Laurent were responsible for the deaths - and the giant bears were sitings of Jacob and the other werewolves. Laurent is dead, but Victoria is coming for Bella. Between them Jacob and Bella work this out.
The wolves begin hunting Victoria using this knowledge to help them. They leave Bella at La Push to keep her safe. Whilst alone there she decides to try cliff-diving, an activity she saw some of the Quileutes doing earlier. Many miles away, Alice has a vision of Bella doing this, and concludes she jumped to her death. (Not far from the truth as Bella nearly drowns afterwards, only being saved by Jacob at the last minute). Alice tells Rosalie, who immediately tells Edward. Upon hearing this, Edward decides to commit suicide the only way he thinks a vampire can - by attempting to reveal the existence of vampires in the home of the largest coven in the world, in Volterra, Italy. Bella and Alice rush to Italy to stop, arriving in the nick of time, but they are taken to see the coven - who are the self-styled leaders of all vampires, who mull over killing Bella there and then, but decide to order Edward to either turn her or kill her soon.
Back in Forks, Bella asks the Cullens to vote on whether she should be turned into a vampire and join them. The majority vote yes, only Edward and Rosalie voting against. However when Bella pushes to be turned there and then, they persuade her not to yet, until they've had time to sort out what they are going to do about Charlie and Bella's family. Eventually she agrees to Edward's condition - Edward will turn her into a vampire if she marries him first.
