Edward is uninterested in the new girl starting his high school until she enters his biology class and he finds himself paralysed by a scent he cannot resist: he spends the rest of the lesson in torment and barely escapes without killing the girl.
Knowing that he and his family depend on their 'vegetarian' lifestyle, he leaves for Alaska to avoid the girl and her irresistable scent. He convinces himself he is safe to return, and joins his brothers and sisters back at school. He becomes intruiged as he finds himself unable to read her mind, and soon he realises that he has fallen in love with her, and wonders at the event of the sun rising in his eternal night.
