Eclipse begins where New Moon left off. Bella is back in forks and back with Edward, but grounded after Both her unexplained three-day absence, and Charlie's discovery that she had been using a motorbike. Shortly after the book begins, Charlie agrees to end her curfew in exchange for spending time with some of her friends other than Edward (Whom he dislikes, blaming him for Bella's state in the previous book), and especially Jacob. This presents difficulties for Bella, as Edward refuses to allow her to be around the werewolves, fearing they are too dangerous. Eventually Bella sneaks away to see Jacob whilst Edward is out hunting. They talk of many things, and Jacob tells her about imprinting - where a werewolf is compelled to dedicate himself to a person.

After this meeting, Edward and Bella fight about Jacob - Edward forbids her from going there again, and Bella refuses. The next time Edward heads off hunting Bella plans to head to La Push but Alice "abducts" her and makes her spend the weekend at the Cullen's house. This plan is scuppered when Jacob comes and grabs her as they are leaving school. Whilst they have a good time, it ends abruptly when Bella tells Jacob that she will be a vampire in a few weeks.

Meanwhile, stories emerge of a spate of murders occuring in Seattle which the Cullens recognise as vampire work. At the same time Victoria reappears and begins her attempts to get at Bella, being thwarted by both the Cullens and the Quileute werewolves. After these attacks continue, Bella realises they are linked - that Victoria is the vampire in Seattle, and that she is raising an army of new born vampires to come and take out the Cullens allowing her to deal with Bella. The Cullens negotiate with the werewolves to band together to fight this threat, and they set up for a battle just outside of Forks to keep the town safe.

After setting up, Bella, Edward and Jacob leave to the mountains to keep Bella well out of the fight. After they get there, Bella begs both Edward and Jacob not to fight. Edward reluctantly agrees, Jacob disagrees and threatens to get himself killed unless Bella proves she loves him as well. She proves this by kissing him properly, holding nothing back. Jacob goes off to fight with his pack leaving Edward, Bella and another, junior, werewolf to help communicate. As the battle gets under-way, Victoria arrives - not in the clearing, but at the camp-site Edward and Bella have set up. She is accompanied by another vampire. Edward and the werewolf fight and beat the vampires, killing them both. They return to the field of battle and cremate the dead vampires as the Volturi's emissaries turn up (late) to destroy the Seattle vampires. They express mild surprise that Bella is still human, and remind Edward that he has to turn her, before they leave.

Bella and Edward begin to prepare there wedding, helped by Alice. Edward sends a wedding invite to Jacob, which finally pushes him over the edge. He runs away as a wolf, hoping it will be easier to cope with.
