After their marriage, Bella and Edward head off on their honeymoon to a paradise island where Edward fulfills Bella's wish for him to make love to her. Some days later Bella discovers she is pregnant and is proceeding at an alarming rate. Back at home with the Cullens, Edward becomes beside himself with worry as the foetus drains Bella of energy, leaving her so weak she is near death. Jacob arrives and inadvertantly provides an idea which proves fruitful. Bella gives birth to a daughter, and names her Renesmee. However, she almost dies in the attempt, only kept alive by Edward's venom and she endures the pain of turning into a vampire. She proves herself to be extraordinarily self controlled for a 'new born', rendering their plans to move away while she adjusts pointless. Renesmee turns out to be an utterly lovable baby, but with a highly accelerated growth rate; Bella is horrified to discover that Jacob has imprinted upon her daughter, but is relieved that this aleviated the hostilities with the La Push werewolf pack. It is discovered that Renesmee has a supernatural talent, as she is able to project images into other's minds.
Renesmee's existance causes untold problems and misunderstandings, resulting in the Volturi journeying to Forks with the intention to destroy her and the Cullens for breaching the law against immortal children. Alice and Jasper disappear, leaving Bella to think that there is no chance of survival, and she makes contingency plans to save Renesmee. Meanwhile, friends of the Cullens gather in Forks to stand with them against the Volturi in defence of Renesmee. Bella learns to extend her mental shield so that she is able to shelter and thus protect the entire group.
The Volturi arrive, and it appears that there may be a battle. However, Alice and Jasper arrive at the last minute, bringing with them another Vampire-Human hybrid, proving that Renesmee is in fact no danger to the vampire community. The Volturi reluctantly retreat, leaving the Cullens and Forks safe.
