A Review by Ruby Barton

I first heard about Twilight at the start of this year; I had, however, heard of somebody named Edward Cullen several years ago. I wondered, "Who is Edward Cullen and why should I care?" At the time, I didn't really care to find out. It was only several months ago, staying at a friend’s house that I was almost forced to watch the Twilight film. I was a little sick by this point with everyone talking about Twilight, so I decided to give it a try. I read the book first, however, since I know a book and a film can be very different. I borrowed the book from a friend and just fell in love with it. Finally, I understood the appeal and the obsession of so many over the books.

Soon after finishing the book, I watched the film. I thought it was very well made, but like some other fans, I thought that the film was not as good as the book. I did feel that the actors were cast as wellas they could be: Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen was an excellent choice in my opinion, and everything I had expected from the Edward in the book. However although Kristen was beautiful as Bella and I thought she did a great job, there were a few points which ruined it for me. For instance, when she and Edward saw Carlisle’s and Charlie’s cars, it felt a little lifeless: the Bella in the book had so much more emotion.

Kristen and Robert had an awesome chemistry; they worked well together, and I believed them as Bella and Edward. Jacob however, I dislike as a character- although I do sympathise with him, as it appears to him that he and Bella are supposed to be together- and that Edward shouldn't exist. Jacob comes across as little egotistical throughout the last three books in the series, and casting Taylor Launter as Jacob is a good decision, however, the speculation of Disney actors/actresses being cast for the characters of Leah and Alec for instance disappoints me somewhat. In my opinion, Disney lacks credibility in this type of venture.

With regards to the upcoming movie, New Moon: it has a lot to live up to and watching the trailer has made me unsure as to how close they have kept to the original storyline. I was expecting the werewolves to be huge, but all I saw was an overgrown raccoon! Not to mention that Bella isn’t supposed to know Jacob is a werewolf until much later on; when he attacks Laurent he is supposed to be in a pack of wolves, rather than phasing in front of Bella as is suggested in the trailer for the movie. This is quite a dramatic change in the plot, but I reserve judgement until the release of the film later on this year.
