Why Marx Would Probably Ban Twilight

Boy, what a hard life the stars of Twilight lead. Shenanigans at the MTV movie awards, rumours abound of a secret pregnancy, car accidents attempting to escape screaming fans... honestly, I do not know how those guys cope. It must be so depressing to be so successful and beautiful and adored. I feel for them, I do.

I found an article today that 'Bella and Edward' barbie dolls are being made in the image of Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson. Those two must feel gods among men. As of November, millions will be able to worship their very own plastic effigies in the comfort of their own home. This comment may seem ridiculous to some in its hyperbole; but the leagues of women and girls who are obsessed with Twilight has reached such a chilling peak.

Twilight is the new religion: it's an opiate for the masses. Edward is the second coming and my goodness isn't he a dish? Seriously though, the level of fandom that the Twilight Saga has perpetrated is mind boggling to behold. And with the second book due for film release in November, and the other two in the pipeline, it seems Twilight is here to stay, for another couple of years at least.

It is in light of this that I bid the Twi-Hard fans to remember, in the midst of their screams, that the Twilight Saga is (and this is by no means a slight) simply, a series of books. Escapism is in many respects a healthy pursuit, but we would do well to recall that real life, however disappointing, at least has the advantage of reality. It is tangible, it is beautiful in its authenticity. At the risk of cliché, it is what you make it. Robert Pattinson is an actor. He isn't Edward Cullen, because Edward Cullen is fictional. Real men may not sparkle in the sun, but they at least undoubtedly exist.

A little decorum? Definitely desirable.

No, Twilight is not going to be banned. The title is merely a reference to the philosopher Karl Marx, who perpetrated communism in all its forms.
